Malwitz Custom Surfboards began in 2004, from a dusty basement in landlocked Philadelphia. Shaping boards quickly became a way for me to feel more connected to surfing, even if I was sixty miles from the ocean. I learned to shape through countless hours of research, indispensable resources like Swaylocks, great advice from other shapers, and just plain practice. In 2006, MCS became Brooklyn-based where I got to know and love the NY coast. I was the only shaper to be working in a dedicated commercial shaping room in Brooklyn and gained plenty of recognition and press. Since then, an emergence of the craft has started to spread through the city with people shaping boards in tiny backrooms and guest bedrooms. Then in 2010, I relocated to South Jersey holding onto my loyal NYC locals with easy board pickups at Lightly Salted in Asbury Park, NJ and Saturdays Surf in NYC. Custom orders are also easily shipped anywhere.
Every MCS board has a strong balance of form and function. They are designed individually with no templates, and colors are always mixed by hand creating a totally unique board. I like to focus on clean lines and overall flow, and many of my boards have a bit more foam and overall width, catered specifically to NY/NJ breaks. I can shape boards for beginners and experts, for all seasons and conditions.
When I’m not shaping, I pay the bills as an Art Director/Designer/Animator.
